Truth in the Bones

"Chris, how dare you say Nancy's death has nothing to do with you?" A cold voice cut through the air. I spun around sharply. It was a stranger, his eyes venomous. "Who are you? Stop spouting nonsense here." I forced down my panic, my tone icy and sharp. "You have no right to speak her name." The man let out a scoff and tossed over a yellowed notebook. "Nonsense? Take a look at this." My breath hitched when I caught sight of the word Nancy on the cover. "Four hundred and thirty-seven drug trials—every last bit of agony is written in here. How dare you claim you didn't force her into this?" He closed in on me step by step. "The skeleton at the press conference was just the beginning. What you owe her; you'll pay sooner or later." I clenched my fists so tight my nails dug into my palms. "She was a thief who ran off with the money. She deserved to die!" The man leaned down, his voice dropping to a ghostly whisper. "A thief? Do you really think it was her who stole that twenty million all those years ago?" He paused, then turned to leave, throwing over a line that sent chills down my spine. "Want to know the truth? Come to the press conference tomorrow—if you dare."收起

Chapter 1 of "Truth in the Bones"

Under the spotlight, I held up the reagent bottle of the "Newborn" experimental drug and spoke into the microphone in a steady, grave voice: "This will be a milestone in the history of human medicine." No sooner had the words left my lips than a sudden commotion erupted at the back of the room. Nancy Shaw's father, hunched and determined, pushed a small cart through the security guards' blockade and charged straight toward the stage. "Chris Lewis! Stop right there!" Nancy's father's voice was hoarse, raw with grief and fury. The entire hall fell into stunned silence, every camera fixated on the stage. With a sudden, furious motion, Nancy's father whipped off the black cloth covering the cart, revealing a pale skeleton inside a transparent specimen box—silencing the room in shock. "This is my daughter, Nancy Shaw!" Nancy's father slammed both hands onto the specimen box, his knuckles white. "She died on the Lewis Group's drug trial bench! Four hundred and thirty-seven drug tests—each one tearing apart her organs and tissues!" My grip tightened around the reagent bottle, forcing myself to stay calm. "Mr. Shaw, I understand the pain of losing your beloved daughter, but you must not confuse right and wrong." "I'm the one confusing right and wrong? You're the one distorting the truth!" Nancy's father shouted, his eyes blazing with anger. "Nancy Shaw took 20 million public funds from my company five years ago and eloped with another man." I spoke deliberately, word by word, "How could such a treacherous thief possibly be our drug trial subject?" Nancy's father was stunned, then grew even more agitated: "You're talking nonsense! Nancy is not that kind of person! You're the one who forced her!" He lunged at me, trying to grab my collar, but the security guard held him down firmly. "Take him away." I waved my hand, my voice cold. "Chris Lewis! You deserve no peace! You'll pay for this!" Nancy's father's roar slowly faded away. Assistant Bruce hurried forward: "Mr. Lewis, should the press conference continue?" "Continue." I gripped the reagent bottle tightly once again. Bruce turned around to calm the crowd: "Ladies and gentlemen of the press, the disturbance a moment ago was caused by unauthorized individuals and has been handled. The press conference will now continue." I cleared my throat and said, "The clinical data for the newborn special-effect drug has undergone rigorous review. All trial participants signed legal agreements, and the entire process was monitored by a professional medical team." A reporter immediately pressed, "Mr. Lewis, Mr. Shaw claims his daughter, Nancy Shaw, participated in 437 drug trials. Does that name appear in the trial records?" "No." I answered firmly, "The list of trial participants is public and verifiable—this name does not exist." "Then how do you explain this skeleton?" Another reporter pressed the question. "Perhaps they mistook the person, or it's a deliberate frame-up." My voice was icy cold. "I will have the legal department launch an investigation." The press conference ended reluctantly. I ordered Bruce, "Dispose of that specimen box." "Mr. Lewis, could this cause problems down the line?" Bruce hesitated. "Do as I say." I emphasized my words firmly. In the empty conference hall, that skeleton hung like a shadow behind my eyes. I was filled with doubt: how did that woman, who vanished five years ago with embezzled funds, end up as cold bones?

The Stand-in's Revenge

I sold myself to Caleb Lewis with my own hands, all for a mere stand-in contract. He made me play the malicious villainess, shielding his true love from harm and sleeping with him. I believed that guarding my heart would let me walk away unscathed, until the banquet's giant screen revealed our bed photo— Before all eyes, he shielded his first love and coldly demanded, "Tina Xavier, was it you who did this?" In that moment, I realized: the stand-in was not a role, but an original sin.收起

Lies That Gnaw at Family

I blocked the basement door, clutching the stack of fake overseas photos. My voice trembled, but every word cut like a blade: "Mia, did you do this? Did you spread those rumors too?" She twirled a strand of hair, her smile vicious yet unapologetic: "So what if I did? Mom, Dad, and Brother only believe me. Who'd ever trust someone as 'superfluous' as you?" "I saved your life!" I lunged forward and grabbed her wrist. "I pushed you out of the way during the car crash! I worked part-time jobs to buy you that cake! Why would you ruin me?" She wrenched her arm free, her eyes glinting with malice: "Because you're in my way! Their love was always meant to be mine alone!" No sooner had the words left her mouth than two dark figures emerged from behind, clamping their hands over my mouth and nose. I struggled, glaring...

My Ex Takes My Daughter

In the warm light of the music store, I was accompanying Tina to choose a practice piano when a familiar male voice suddenly pierced my eardrums, freezing the blood in my veins. Charles stood not far away, dressed in a neat suit and leather shoes. He looked more composed than he had seven years ago, yet the arrogance of his younger self still lurked in his eyes. "Bella, seven years apart, and you're still so shabby," he said as he walked over, his gaze sweeping over Tina and me with a condescending contempt in his tone. "Buying this kind of cheap piano for the kid? If you hadn't plagiarized back then, would you have ended up so hard up?" I suddenly clenched Tina's hand tightly, my fingertips turning white. "Charles, shut your mouth! Stars is my work—it was you and Nancy who teamed up to steal it!" "Steal?" He let...

"Fiona?" Felix Green held a cigar between his fingertips. His black suit made him stand tall and straight, and his voice was imposing. "Stay here and obey my rules." "What do you want me to do?" I stepped back warily. Dylan shoved me forward. "Fiona, take good care of Mr. Green." "I don't need a servant." Felix chuckled, cutting Dylan off. "The money's been transferred to your account. Leave." The heavy door clicked shut. I was like a bird in a cage. "My rules," he said. "Don't ask questions that aren't your business. Be at my beck and call." "What about my freedom?" I turned to look at him. He grabbed my wrist, his grip tight and forceful. "You lost your freedom the moment you were sold." "It hurts!" I struggled, and red marks sprang up on my wrist. He let go, his thumb brushing the red marks. "Don't provoke...

The Dark Side of Wedding

"Debra Buck, you're truly the most obedient dog the Buck family has ever raised." Allen Shane grasped my chin; the first words he spoke to me at the end of the wedding aisle shattered every disguise he had worn. The ring slipped coldly onto my finger, but I felt the engraving inside — his and Sylvia Buck's initials. My blood instantly froze. "Surprised?" He pressed close to my ear, his breath scorching, his words venomous: "You stole her identity, so I'll let you taste what it's like to live as a laughingstock under her name." The guests' blessings crashed down like a tidal wave. I clenched my skirt, my fingertips digging into the palm of my hand: "Allen Shane, you will regret this." He smiled, but his eyes were as cold as ice: "You're the one who will regret it."收起
