"Taylor, you can't leave." The muzzle of Ethan Lewis's gun still smoked, and a tearing pain surged through my left leg. I fell into the mud, looking up at him as rain mixed with blood streamed down. "Why?" I grabbed his collar. "You know my teammate would die—" His gaze was icy cold. "I told you, you cannot leave." "I am a police officer!" I shouted, tears falling into the mud. "Ethan, those covers before, those intel—were they all lies?" As I was taken away by his men, I stared at him, my heart boiling with boundless hatred. His eyes were bloodshot, yet he smiled: "Taylor Sewell, this bullet's your only way out."收起

Chapter 1 of "Lies We Guard"

The wind of Northern Exile always carried sand; my hand gripping the patrol baton turned white at the knuckles. A teammate's voice came through the walkie-talkie, reporting illegal immigrants spotted at Westwind Bluff. I sprinted toward that direction, and from afar I saw a curled-up figure, wearing a dark coat stained with mud, like a piece of cloth discarded by the wind. "Don't move!" I raised my gun and stepped forward, my voice as cold as the frost on the border. The man slowly raised his head. The gun in my hand wavered slightly. It was Ethan Lewis. Five years had passed; a scar now ran from his brow bone to his jawline, yet those eyes were just as piercingly bright as ever. "Taylor." He spoke, his voice hoarse and uncertain. A buzzing sound echoed in my mind as memories surged forth. "Who said you could call me Taylor?" I stepped forward and seized his collar. His arm was wrapped in bandages, bleeding through—likely wounded during the illegal crossing. "I have been searching for you for five years." He looked at me, his eyes filled with an emotion I could not decipher, "Why did you not keep our appointment back then?" "Appointment?" I laughed, a laugh steeped in hatred, "Ethan, how dare you speak of an appointment?" I remembered Frank lying in a pool of blood, the darkness of the dungeon, the gunshot wound on my leg. Rage flared like fire; I raised my hand and twisted his injured arm with brutal force. Crack— the sound of bone breaking rang out sharply in the wind. He uttered a muffled grunt, cold sweat breaking out on his forehead, yet he did not push me away. "Taylor, please let me explain..." "Explain what?" I drew my pistol from my waist and pressed the muzzle against his forehead. "Explain why you shot me all those years ago. Explain why Frank died." My hand trembled; Frank's smiling face flashed before my eyes, along with that rainy night five years ago. The bullet in the gun seemed to burn like fire, yet I could not pull the trigger. I closed my eyes for a moment, holstered the gun, and spoke into the walkie-talkie: "There's an illegal immigrant here. Bring him back." Before my teammate arrived, Ethan broke free from my restraints and fled. Before running away, he glanced back at me one last time, his eyes brimming with grievance and defiance.

A Confession Paid with Life

Maggie Lynn ground her foot on my injured hand. "Felix, is this the person you've been protecting?" "It wasn't me! I didn't give him the ointment!" I screamed in agony. Henry, wrapping a bandage around his hand, feigned a placating tone. "Sis, don't be angry. Felix is just jealous that you're nice to me." "Jealous?" Maggie grabbed a handful of my hair and slapped me hard across the face. "I put a roof over your head, clothed and fed you, even held an art exhibition for you—and this is how you repay me, by hurting my brother!" "He switched the ointment himself! The Three Numbers

When my son Larry suddenly blurted out "92, 70, 92," my smile froze on my face. "Who taught you those numbers?" Larry pointed toward the living room: "Mom." Quincy walked over holding a cup of water, her eyes dodging mine: "It's just some interest homework from kindergarten, asking the kids to memorize number combinations." She said it lightly, reaching out to pull Larry away. I grabbed her hand firmly, my voice turning colder, "Larry's only in middle class. What teacher would assign something so strange?" She suddenly pulled her hand back, panic flashing in her eyes. 'If you don't believe it, fine. Why bother arguing with the kid?' The next day, when I saw that live shopping video, the host's words really hit me. “92A, 70 cm waist, 92 cm hips, zodiac year red underwear—dive in with your eyes closed!” Quincy Scott is in her zodiac year this year! I was holding my newborn daughter, my fingers trembling as I opened that post from Tate's secretary, Caroline. The picture showed her cradling her baby, with my husband Tate standing beside her, his eyes filled with a tenderness I'd never seen before. I dialed his number, trying to keep my voice steady: "Tate, I had our baby. It's a daughter." "Got it. I'll come over later." His voice was impatient. "I have some personal business to take care of right now." "What personal business?" I stared at the photo, my blood nearly freezing. "Is that your secretary and your newborn son?" There was a two-second silence on the other end, then his tone turned cold. "Amelia, Caroline saved my life. She gave birth to my son. From now on, they'll be living at home." "This is my home, and I don't agree!" I almost shouted. "You don't get a say...
