A Reckoning Deferred

2026-03-04

The gilded envelope slid across the desk toward me. The lawyer's voice was flat and emotionless: "Ms. Scott, Mr. Charles' inheritance gift agreement." I gripped my coffee spoon tight: "He's not even dead yet, and you're in such a hurry to divide his estate?" "He has late-stage pancreatic cancer. Only three months left. He just wants to see you one last time." He handed over a photo. The man in it was a gaunt shadow of his former self. Hatred surged through me. I slammed the agreement down: "Tell him I don't care about his money. And I definitely don't want to see him." My phone suddenly rang. His mother's sobs cut through the line like a knife: "Whitney, Charles is coughing up blood again! If you don't come now, you'll never see him alive again!" "See him?" I thought of that snowy night five years ago. I'd knelt before him, begging for help with Nancy clinging to life in my arms. He'd walked away without a second glance. "When Nancy was dying, who gave her a second chance?" "I'm begging you!" His mother's voice broke into hysterics. I gritted my teeth: "Send me the address."收起

Chapter 1 of "A Reckoning Deferred"

The gilt-edged envelope was gently pushed across the table just as the steam rising from the coffee cup blurred the face of the man opposite. He wore a dark gray suit, a white pocket square visible at his chest—an appearance forged in the depths of elite society. "Ms. Scott, I am Lawyer Lee." His voice was steady and calm: "This is the inheritance agreement from Mr. Charles Green." My fingers clenched the coffee spoon sharply, knuckles whitening, my heart gripped by an invisible hand. The two words "Charles Green" struck like rusty nails, suddenly driven into the most fragile part of my heart. "Inheritance?" My throat was dry, yet the corner of my mouth curled into a mocking smile. "He's not even dead yet, and you're already eager to divide the inheritance?" Lawyer Lee pushed up his gold-rimmed glasses and took out a photograph, placing it beside the agreement: "Ms. Scott, Mr. Green has been diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer and has less than three months to live." "His only wish now is to see you one last time." I lowered my head to look at the photograph. The man in it was gaunt and emaciated; his once sharp eyebrows were now sunken, and his eyes held a desolate pallor—entirely unlike the confident Charles Green I once knew. Yet even so, the suffocating hatred engulfed me in an instant; I sharply turned my face away, my stomach churning tumultuously. Five years. I thought I had long since buried this name, this person, along with the heart-wrenching past. But whenever I think of Nancy, of her small frame curled in my arms against the biting wind, whispering, "Mom, I'm cold," all my pretenses shatter completely. "See me?" I found my voice, trembling yet icy, "By what right?" Lawyer Lee remained silent, sitting quietly to give me time to digest. The soft music from the cafe and the chatter from the neighboring table receded into the background, leaving only my wildly beating heart and the roaring cold wind beside my ear. I remembered the snowy night five years ago, when thick snowflakes had stained the world in a desolate white. I held Nancy, her body icy cold, and knelt before Charles Green's car, begging, "Charles, please, send Nancy to the best hospital!"

The Wound That Led Me to Bliss

Five years ago, I pushed open the door to my home and saw them tangled together, their clothes in disarray. "What are you doing?" Dylan River stood up, a defiant look on his face. "Reed, Jennifer and I truly love each other." "She is my wife!" Jennifer George avoided my gaze. "Let's get a divorce. Actually, Dylan and I have been together for a year." Now, upon reuniting, she whispered softly, "Dylan and I have come to your place, hoping to see you." "Reed, there was a misunderstanding back then—" "Misunderstanding?" I pulled my hand away, my voice firm and resolute, "Threatening me with my mother's grave to force me to sign the divorce papers—is that really a misunderstanding? Ruining my life, stepping over my pain to climb higher—is that what you call a misunderstanding?" I stared at them, each word weighed with five years of concealed accusation: "You came...

The Movie Queen

The phone screen lit up, the headline stabbing like a poisoned dagger straight into my eyes. "Rising star Grace Scott caught in photo scandal—private pictures leaked!" The photos were taken in my bedroom, my face so clear there was nowhere to hide. The makeup artist's powder puff froze mid-air, and the director's furious shout echoed from a distance. At that time, I still didn't know the person who planned all this was the one who promised to protect me forever.收起

I Bought Out My Ex's Empire

Luna Clark slammed a five-million cheque down in front of me, her bright red nail polish glaringly vivid. "Pamela, sign the divorce papers, take the money and get out—don't dirty the Lewis Family's doorstep!" I ran my fingertips over the check and chuckled softly. "How generous of you, Ms. Clark. But do you think this money is enough to fill the hole in the Lewis Group's project?" Her face dropped instantly. "How dare you threaten me?" "Threaten is too strong a word." I pulled out my phone and waved it lightly. "I just finished chatting with Daniel. He's quite interested in your bidding reserve price." "You dare collude with that illegitimate kid!" Luna shrieked. "I'll add another ten million! Cut ties with him—now!" "Fifteen million total? Done." I pocketed my phone, my gaze turning cold. "But Ms. Clark, don't you ever wonder... what gives me the nerve to cooperate with...

Thanks to My Brother-Obsessed Ex

Three days before the wedding, in the afternoon, I got a call from my girlfriend, Tina Woods. "Michael Fey, my brother Drake woke up!" she said tearfully, but then her tone shifted abruptly, "Can we... postpone the wedding? He needs me now." I gripped the schedule tightly, holding back my anger: "Everything is set. You want to postpone now?" "He's my brother!" she shouted. Then, her brother Drake Woods' weak, deliberate voice came through the phone: "Tina, don't make things hard for Michael. I shouldn't have woken up now..." Tina Woods immediately cut him off with a pang of pain, then turned coldly to me and said, "Michael, the wedding has to be postponed! If not, I'm not going to marry you! You need to come to the hospital right now and apologize to Drake!" I looked at the wedding invitations we had painstakingly prepared over half a year and...

The shopping mall was swarming with people; I was holding my seven-year-old daughter's hand when a stranger slapped me in public and forced me to kneel.
