A Calculated Exit

"Vincent, let's get a divorce." I slid the agreement across the table. He glanced at it, then suddenly grabbed it and tossed it into the candle flame—the fire flared, swallowing the words "Beth Woodward." "Are you out of your mind?" He slammed his hand on the table and stood up. "I don't love you anymore." My voice was steadier than I expected. "Every lie you told only made me more disgusted that I ever loved you." His eyes darkened, and he suddenly leaned in: "Do you think divorce is that simple?" Just then, the phone rang. I answered. A woman's voice came through, laughing: "Mrs. Woodward, your husband said something interesting last night while he was at my place..." I looked at Vincent Mussolini's suddenly changed face and whispered into the receiver, "What did he say?"收起

Chapter 1 of "A Calculated Exit"

The candle flames on the cake flickered gently, the warm yellow light, refracted through the chandelier, casting a soft, blurred glow over everything before my eyes. The silver-gray tablecloth laid on the table was one I had specially replaced last week, hoping to make this birthday seem respectable. Yet now, it only made the surroundings feel colder. I took a deep breath and blew out the last candle. My thirtieth birthday—no surprises, no blessings, not even a single sincere greeting. In the vast dining room, only two sets of tableware were laid out for us. Amid the silence that filled the room, only the faint, cloying scent of the man opposite was sharp and clear, like a slender needle, occasionally pricking my nerves. That was not my scent. My fingertips tightened slightly as I clenched the divorce agreement I had long prepared. I took a deep breath and pulled it out from my bag. Calm and resolute, I slid it across to Vincent Mussolini, as if completing a long-anticipated ritual. "Vincent, let's get a divorce." My voice was calm, as calm as if I were speaking about today's weather. Vincent's movement froze. He had just lifted the knife and fork, his hand suspended in mid-air, eyes first stunned, then gradually turning cold; the temperature dropped swiftly until it crystallized into a block of ice, shooting straight at me with a bone-chilling chill. "What did you say?" His voice was low, but it carried an unyielding oppressive weight. I didn't repeat myself; I simply pointed to the agreement: "I've drafted all the terms. I want nothing, I'll walk away empty-handed." Vincent Mussolini glanced down at the signature line on the agreement; my name, "Beth Woodward," was already signed, the handwriting neat and precise. The next moment, he picked up the agreement and casually tossed it into the nearby candle flame. The paper caught fire instantly; the orange-red flames greedily licked the printed words, while tendrils of black smoke curled upwards, carrying a faint scent of burnt paper. Within seconds, the agreement had turned into a handful of black ashes, which, stirred by a gentle breeze, drifted onto the pristine tablecloth like an ugly, indelible stain. "Beth, are you out of your mind?" He slammed the table suddenly; the clash of knives and forks rang out sharply. I sat motionless, my back perfectly straight, quietly watching him, my gaze as calm as a deep pool of water. Listening to his shouting, my heart remained utterly still. After all these years, I had long grown weary of his temper tantrums. It was always the same—slamming the table, glaring, hiding his insecurity behind the most hurtful words—recycled endlessly, with no spark of originality. "Are you in love with someone else?" Vincent squinted, his tone thick with insult, "So eager to divorce me, just to run off with your lover?" I said nothing in reply. Arguing with him would only make me feel more humiliated.

The Needles in My Shoes

"Chip, tie my shoelaces tighter. If I win, I'll buy you ice cream!" I stood on tiptoe, nudging his arm. He crouched down, his fingers going a little stiff. I teased, "Nervous? It's not like you're the one running the 800 meters." He didn't look up, his voice low, "Don't let your guard down—Christina's in this too." Before the starting gun, Christina Sterling came over, her sweet smile hiding a sharp edge: "Melanie, don't go easy on me later!" I was about to snap back when Chip Johnson suddenly grabbed me: "Melanie, maybe you shouldn't run? I'm afraid you'll get hurt." "What nonsense are you talking about!" I shrugged him off. "I've trained for a whole year just for today!" The gunshot went off, and I dashed forward, but halfway through the second lap, a sharp pain shot through the sole of my foot, like needles stabbing into my flesh....

That wedding six years ago was supposed to be the happiest day of my life. "Farina Franco, you truly disgust me." Gene Donovan threw the photo in my face, his eyes sharp like a poisoned blade. The photo showed me naked, tangled with a stranger—fake, all of it fake. "Listen to me, let me explain—" "Explain?" He sneered, "My sister's diary is right here! Your father raped her and drove her to suicide! There's not a single decent person in your family!" He forcibly dragged me away and shoved me into the car. "Where are you taking me?" "The psychiatric hospital. You're insane and need treatment." His voice was cold and emotionless: "This is the punishment you deserve."收起

Farewell to Love and Hatred

"Charles! My mom is dying! She's calling your name!" I clutched his wedding announcement with Rebecca and banged on the iron gate until it rattled. The carved door swung open. He had his arm around Rebecca, his voice cold as ice. "Mia Lynn, we're already divorced. Her business is none of my concern." My nails dug into the railings. "Can't you just go to the hospital to see her one last time?" Rebecca feigned a placating tone. "Charles just got married. Ms. Lynn, please don't make a scene." "Make a scene?" I laughed until tears streamed down my face. "I gave my heart and soul to this family, and you turned around and married your student?" Charles waved for the security guards. "Get her out of here!" As they manhandled me away, I screamed at the top of my lungs. "If my mom dies, you'll never have peace for the...
